Fresh Forms From the Fire
March 2020 soda firing a lighthouse artCenter
Just a little bit different.
This last firing I placed glazed pieces and glazed test tiles that contained copper Carbonate throughout the kiln. Example: oribe, and Pete’s copper. This strategy yielded copper fuming on most of my works. Aka copper blush!
I enjoy the results and I hope you do too.

New batch of super pots from the Lighthouse Art Center’s Soda kiln.
This cross draft catenary arch soda was designed by Justin Lambert and built by Will MCComb. Two super artist and super people.

Yunomi from the door stack.
Lesson learned. Trimmed too thin on the base wall of the large jar. I witnessed the lean occurring between cone 8-9. Until it found rest against this little planter.
Such a side wade.

Porcelain, harvest beach sand slip, lightly glazed, then soda fired in a cross draft arch kiln.
Surface quality. The Iron present in sand at the outer most of the surface flux and flow into glaze solution to create rivulets and movement.
The iron in the sand that is protected with a thin layer of Clay slip maintains its structure creating a dark freckle.
The combination of reduction and soda yields variation in the surface from one side to the other.
